Product Description When you're looking for a good transition shoe for school or work into an evening out, the Unisex 3 Eye Steel Toe Gibson from Dr. Martens just might be the pair for you. Made with haircell leather--the best, strongest, and most valued layer of hide--this Gibson shoe will take a beating, and yet clean up enough to be your Sunday best. The durable sole has a unique air-cushioned feature that's bound to please the most discerning feet. Benefits of Goodyear Welt Goodyear welt is a shoe construction in which the upper and sole of the shoe are stitched together for greater durability rather than glued. The resulting seam is visible and runs around the outside of the shoe, where the upper and outsole meet. About Dr. Martens Dr. Martens is the stuff of legends. It all began near Munich, Germany in 1945 when Dr. Klaus Maertens injured his foot in a skiing accident in the Bavarian Alps. To make walking easier during the healing process, he designed a shoe with an air-cushioned sole. Using old rubber tires, he constructed soles that had air trapped within closed compartments. He showed his prototype to his engineer/inventor friend, Dr. Herbert Funck, and together they decided to develop and produce the shoes. Not only did the shoe solve the doctor's immediate problem, but it also started to sell well in Germany. By 1959 the two decided that they needed a company to produce and distribute the shoes, then called Dr. Maertens, in other parts of the world. At first, many manufacturers rejected the concept of an air cushioned sole as a short-lived gimmick. However, the R. Griggs Group, located in the village of Wollaston in England, decided to go along with the idea by creating the first work boot with the revolutionary sole. On the first of April 1960, the first cherry red eight-eyelet work boot was produced and named 1460 (1/4/60). To sell the brand name better in England, the name was anglicized to Dr. Martens. The range was branded AirWair and the rest is history.
Product Description A classic boot for independent thinkers and comfort seekers alike. Genuine Nappa-leather upper is super soft with a cool, wear-with-anything matte finish. Shock-blockng PVC sole features updated flex-link technology for added comfort. Classic yellow Z-stitch accents. Imported.

The classic, just right November 19, 2008 Karl E. Hopkins-lutz I loved the style, and they were more comfortable than other hiking boots I'd bought. The boots are light, though I changed out the laces for a more traditional set of yellow/brown laces, which picked up the stitching in the soles. They fit great with one or two pairs of socks for extra moisture-wicking. The only problem I found was that after a month or so of wear around campus, the middle of the soles started to collect snow, which impacted the treading on snow or ice, and also made it slightly awkward and uncomfortable to walk. Although on dirt, gravel, mud, and concrete paths, the tread never fails. The large pull tab on the back may look a little silly, but it really helps in getting the boots on; and the nice, high top to the cuff really helps when walking through deep snow or just keeping your feet dry and warm. This was my first pair of Dr Marten's but I am thoroughly pleased with the amount of comfort they offer.
stylish, though a little uncomfortable November 16, 2008 Yifei Liu (Bloomington, IN, USA) The color is sharp and stylish. But it took a lot of pain to break in.
Good solid boots November 9, 2008 HJM (PA) Got my first pair of DM 1460 boots, color - Tan Greenland. The appearance of the boots is akin to a pair of distressed jeans, they look like they've been worn for a while. At first the boots were very stiff and hurt my feet, but after two weeks of wearing them every day they have broken in nicely and are very comfortable. I was surprised at how much cushion the sole has. Overall they seem like they will last me for a long time.

DMs are no longer DMs get Solovair July 14, 2008 GDW (England) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have worn DMs for years but no longer. I bought a couple of pairs three years ago and later discovered that they are now made in various locations in the East and as a result they are without question sub standard. Further to this, surely it isn't ethical for an English standard like DMs to be taken away from the people who made it great, but then that's business...isn't it? I now wear Solovair 8 eyelet boots. These are made in Northampton, England by one of the companies that made the original Air Cushioned Soles for DMs, they also have the fully welted soles which DMs do not. In a nutshell, if you want honest, best quality made in England air cushioned soled boots like the original ones you can remember, then you need to buy Solovair.
