Created as a benefit project for Artists' Project Earth, an organization devoted to protecting the environment, reversing climate change, and tendering disaster relief, this compilation pairs Western pop stars (U2, Sting, Artic Monkeys, et al) and their hits with all-new arrangements performed by members of Cuba's Buena Vista Social Club plus other Havana-based talent. The overall effect is of a well-meaning but not entirely simpatico mutual admiration society. Coldplay's "Clocks" is a good example; the lead vocal is coolly lethargic, engulfing the spiky crags of the rhythm section like syrup on a waffle. But then, most of the singers sound strangely unconnected to the frisky 1-2-3/1-2 of the clavé beat. The contrast between the two groups of players could have been bracing, and to many ears it perhaps will be, but most of the time, they seem to transmitting from parallel universes. Not surprisingly, the best tracks are those in which hometown icons are left to do what they do best. But the late, great Ibrahim Ferrer's marvelous interpretation of "As Time Goes By" (his final recording) and Omara Portuondo's wistful yet powerful cover of "Killing Me Softly" only serve to further showcase what's amiss with the rest of the album. --Christina Roden

5 out of 5 stars Coldplay and co do the Tango   November 16, 2009
Nse Ette (Lagos, Nigeria)
This album pairs Cuban icons Buena Vista Social Club with mostly Western artists, reworking the artists original songs, or just covers of songs, all done for an environmental cause. For example, Coldplay rework their hit "Clocks" to a Tango-like rhythm supplied by Buena Vista Social Club. Styles range from Bossa Nova to Flamenco to Salsa.

Standouts include a frenetic extremely catchy "Dancing shoes" with Arctic Monkeys, a serene "One step too far" by Dido and Faithless, "I still haven't found what I'm looking for" (with vocals by Coco Freeman), a truly beautiful reworking of "She will be loved" featuring Maroon 5 (which I prefer to their original), "Modern way" featuring Kaiser Chiefs, a lulling "Ai no corrida" featuring Vania Borges and Quincy Jones, "Fragilidad" (Sting's "Fragile" featuring the man himself in a languid Latin mood), "The dark of the matinee" featuring Franz Ferdinand and Coco Freeman, and "High & dry" featuring Radiohead and El Lele.

"Killing me softly" is done in Spanish by Omara Portuondo, while the late great Ibrahim Ferrer appears on two versions of "As time goes by".

The instrumentation is exquisite, rich in horns and rhythm (this is Cuban music after all). Perfect for a cocktail, candle lit dinner, or to just plain put you in a beautiful mood! Should do the environment a whole lot of good.

4 out of 5 stars Very good music   January 6, 2009

I received the product pretty quickly. It is really nice. Some of the lyric's translations are not the best but the music is amazing!

4 out of 5 stars latin/pop duet remix   June 16, 2008
R. Olsen (Reston, VA)
Great combo of Buena Vista Social Club latin vibe "duet" remakes of recent and older pop hits / combined with artists like Coldplay, U2, Jack Johnson, Maroon Five, Dido, Arctic Monkeys, latin stars too - Some dancing and listening.

5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC SALSA CD OF SONGS YOU WOULDN'T EXPECT   April 7, 2008
J.L.A. (California)
This is a must-own CD from Buena Vista Social Club. Mainstream rock, pop, and alternative redone in Salsa. My favorites are Buena Vista's version of Coldplay song and of U2. You will not be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Smooth   March 12, 2008
E. A. Galan (Houston, TX)
This is a great CD. It takes music that you are probably already familiar with and gives it a fun little latin twist.
