Juan Luis Guerra takes another look at his long, successful career on Coleccion Romantica, a lavish, two-disc affair that finds the Dominican Republic native revisiting and remixing some of his most successful songs. The collection's 20 tracks could have arguably fit on only one CD, especially considering that Guerra has already released two greatest-hits albums in 1994 and 1996. Still, this is a compulsively listenable affair, marked by Guerra's trademark dabbling in jazz harmonies, African music, and pop flavors. The collection's first five tracks--"Tu," "Razones," "Ay Mujer," "Quisiera," and "Amor de Conuco"--have been transformed from their original salsa and merengue versions into polished ballads. The trick works, and it sets the exotic, candlelit mood that figures throughout the album. Other hits such as "Burbujas de Amor" and "Bachata Rosa" have never sounded better, thanks to studio remastering. Even if Guerra's previous hits albums are already in your library, Coleccion Romantica deserves a prime spot on the shelf. --Joey Guerra

Romantic perfection even if you don't speak Spanish September 14, 2007

I first overheard Guerra as background music in a Mexican restaurant, and I stopped the conversation to say, "who IS that?" Luckily I was able to find out, and I rushed to buy all his albums. But this one is the best, as it is just his slow love ballads. I don't speak ten words of Spanish, but every song here is full of meaning for me. Put this CD on and start kissing your partner, you won't stop for another hour.

Looking for the 440 CD that includes the unforgettably romantic song "Reina Mia," I came across this CD, already having a copy of Los Grandes Exitos de 440, which also does not have the song on it. For anyone who's never heard the ecstatic, upbeat, joyoyus "Reina Mia," you haven't heard all that Juan Luis Guerra has given us. For me, every, rare, time that I hear it, it brings tears of joy to my eyes - my brother-in-law Jose played it for us the night of our wedding when he hosted a second wedding reception party at his home. The harmonies, fast beat, beautiful lyrics and joy of this song should not be missed by any collection that purports to be the Coleccion Romantica of Juan Luis Guerra y Quatro Quarenta - I don't know why it's been left off, sadly...

Juan Luis Guerra's interpretation of bachata/romantic music is simply stunning! It is rare that an artist can transfer the energy and light of faster music (merengue and salsa being an example) and showcase that ability in slower paced songs. Some of the best music from this Dominican legend are featured, here, on this double CD. They include "Frio, Frio" and "Amor De Conuco." These songs are perfect for a romantic evening with your sweetheart, or, if you are cooking a warm meal in the kitchen. Guerra brings soul, heart and sincerity to all of these songs.....this is just one example of his multitude of abilities as a singer, to appeal to his universal audience. It really doesn't matter if you speak Spanish or not. His songs will touch you.........

I listened to it over and over, was very pleased with the artist's work in this set! Highly recommend it to any one who appreciates Juan Luis Guerra's music!
