| Customer Reviews: GENIUS OR LUNATIC? September 13, 2002 kaysixone (Manchester, UK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
"Revolution dub" dates from the early days of the Black Ark studio and features nine short stabs of stripped down minimalist dub music, instantly recognisable as the work of Lee "Scratch" Perry the Upsetter. It's one of my favourite dub albums of the 1970's, even though by 21st century standards it's more than a little brief (just over 30 minutes is simply not enough these days). This cd reissue also suffers from poor sound quality on some of the tracks, which sadly is often the case with Lee Perry re-releases, but fortunately the quality of the music shines through. The opening "Dub revolution" sets the mood: slow, deep and heavy, with only some crisp rhythm guitar prominent in the mix alongside the bass and drums, plus intermittent fx and vocal interruptions from the Upsetter ("This is dub revolution! Music to rock the nation!" etc).... Perry has always taken risks with sound, using his maverick imagination to push the very basic technology at his disposal to the limits. Maybe not as slick-sounding as some people would like, his productions have always been infused with a special kind of musical madness and this album is no exception. For example, "Doctor on the go" features snippets from vintage British TV sitcom "Doctor in the house" mixed into a version of Junior Byles' excellent "The long way" and somehow it works perfectly. Go figure.
not perry's best June 22, 2001 Heidi M. Hawkins (Bellingham, WA: City of Subdued Excitement) 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
i dig a lot of perry's mixing--he truly set the standard for lo-fi dub. what wrecks this disc for me, however, is the childish ear-shattering belches & other annoying noxious sounds from perry's mouth. if he'd kept his mouth shut on this one, it would be much more listenable. there's also a great deal of vocals left on these recordings, and in my opinion, they don't add much. i suggest "upsetter in dub" over this recording. if you really like the vocals i find annoying, i suggest "kung fu meets the dragon," where his noises are more comical & appropriate in the context of the theme. "revolution dub" is a 1998 re-issue of tracks from the 1970's. musicians credited include: boris gardener, michael "boo" richards, benbow, earl "chinna" smith, mikey chung, billy boy, keith stirling, winston wright, scully simms, and perry himself adding to the percussion. the track notes about perry's studio and nickname are interesting.

One of Perry's most enlightened lps and among the best he ever did, "Revolution Dub" continues to stand the test of time beautifully. The tracks are funky and filled with Perry's amazing studio wizardry- echoplex chambers are common throughout, as is reverb (check out my favorite track on the cd, "Kojak") The cd is solid from start to finish and is an essental Perry cd to have in your collection.
dont leave home with out this masterpiece March 12, 1999 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
