It's hardly a stretch to say that Antonio Carlos Jobim--the wonderful Brazilian composer almost single-handedly responsible for all things bossa nova--influenced some of past half century's best and most insipid musics, from bossa nova jazz to elevator Muzak. Wave, a collection of 1967 dates featuring keyboardist Jobim backed by an extensive orchestra, straddles that line: it's full of amazing original compositions, but the arrangements have a certain faux suave, late-'60s lounge feel that reeks of stale cheese. The result is actually great, the veneer of kitsch insidiously masking Jobim's trademark immeasurable sadness, which creeps up on you and leaves you unexpectedly affected. --Keven McAlester

Relaxing and with Brazilian beats, Jobim's classic deserves a place in one's CD collection. The arrangements are flawless, making this CD pleasurable from beginning to end. The whole album is soothing and includes a wide variety of musical instruments. Everybody I've exposed it to seems to love it immediately, something unusual in itself. I've never become tired of this album.

The sublime sound of Tom August 28, 2009

Tom, of course, is Antonio Carlos Jobim, easily the most important figure in the bossa nova (the new thing) period of the late 50s and the early 60s. Jobim wrote beautiful music that still intrigues anyone who takes the time to listen. "Wave", the title piece of this album, is one of my favorite pieces of music. Trombones with Tom on the piano, displaying not such much his piano skills as his ultimate sense of musicianship. I also love "Look to the Sun".

Bossa nova touches something timeless in us, I think. It's wistful, carrying us along on a wave of beauty that never quite translates into joy but rather into fate and inevitability. The lyrics of Wave express that idea, but the music does it better. The metaphor of the wave is Brazilian fatalism and romanticism, and the timeless beauty of Rio. It's a vision that Jobim's music captures with stark beauty.

If you like the song "Wave" as much as I do, be sure to get Oscar Peterson's incredible version of it. Utterly fantastic, a masterpiece.

I really enjoy listening to Wave. I find the sound relaxing and the songs enjoyable. I recently started listening to the famous Getz/Gilberto album and I wanted to pickup albums from some of the other artists featured on it, hence Wave. Good album and I would recommend it to anyone who liked Getz/Gilberto.

The title track, for which I bought the CD, was everything I expected. Unfortunately the rest of the CD was "ho hum". I'm going to donate it to the Public Radio annual CD sale.
