5 out of 5 stars Incredible music   September 28, 2009

Sort of a more primitive Sweet Honey and the Rock. Picture Joseph Spence and company sitting in their back yard in an impromptu jam/singing session. The funeral song and the song about wanting to hear her mother pray again are sooooooo wonderful!

5 out of 5 stars Joseph Spence, what an experience   May 24, 2001

Listening to Joseph Spence is a little like witnessing a jam session. One has the feeling that the music is being produced by an artist who is one with his inspiration, his muse. The music is raw, gentle, unique and permeated with love and affection. Joseph Spence plays as if music is necessary for his spirit.

5 out of 5 stars Unique sound of Bahamian Blues/Gospel   December 15, 2000

I'm so glad to see that this CD is still available. I bought it when it was first released and have recently lost it by loaning it to a friend of a friend. Arggghhh! Unfortunately, in my life I don't find many people interested in blues, accoustic, or eclectic music (As I live in Memphis, I know that this is my failing and not other peoples'.) However, when I do, they are invariable amazed by this CD and want it for themselves. For fans of Ry Cooder-type electic music, or reggae, or blues or gospel, this is simply one of the best ever. It is the real-life recording of a religious-revival-jam session that even an athiest like myself would love to have attended. Listen to some of those audio cuts Amazon has available. But for the very best experience, buy the music and turn it up loud! One of the interesting things I noticed is that the melody is usually carried by the bass voices and the soprano is the harmony. Truly a unique and excellent sound!
