3 out of 5 stars couple steps forward , maybe one back   March 17, 2010
J. Saenz (MS, USA)
pro: I own a silver 4gb clip and black 8 gb clip+. won't go into great detail like online reviews, but the single best addition is folder browsing....this feature alone caused me to buy it as I am still happy w/my old clip. this is great for keeping track of those podcasts that aren't tagged correctly and end up as "unknown" and be very difficult to navigate thru in players that only use tags. If you use a podcast client such as gpodder that syncs downloads into folders this can be quite nice, and not present on the old model. sandisk kept the value pretty good still with pretty good audio quality(provided you get a decent pair of buds or hook to an aux port of a decent audio system) and now has an expansion slot(have not tried and can't judge effect on battery life. the firmware also seems much faster than on the old model, and good features like auto bookmarking podcasts where you stopped listening and switched to music or fm and resuming are still there. shut down and start up are much quicker. i think the clip has gripped on my clothing much better on this new model.

con: unfortunately, the highly touted "better build quality" of the plus is a matter of someone else's opinion. the clip sure enough had a flimsier clip but could be replaced(if you could find one that is) but overall, the silver clip had metallic volume and on/lock switches(other colors of clip had painted plastic sliders) and the mirrored front way cooler looking. I liked its more squarish lines better and it felt a little heavier and more solid. new model has square dial and not lit up which is a disappointment. the volume button placement is ok for either model with me. better would have been to have the jack come out on the top of the device so we don't have at least an inch sticking out the side and wear and tear on the wire as it bends back and forth. the plastic facing where it snaps onto the textured back seems to be quite cheaply done and one month after purchase seems to constantly have plasticky creaky noises emanating forth whenever any pressure is applied to the facing of the device. worse yet is that the battery life is nowhere near the 15 hours advertised....lucky to get 10. the battery strength meter seems way off and the device seems to cut off when power reads around 20% and this is quite annoying. subjectively, battery life seems to be less than the original for some reason.
all i feel like writing...better than original in some ways , worse in others. hope Sandisk addresses the battery meter issue in a firmware update(others complaining too) but none out yet. for a podcast listener still a good bet though from the feel of it (I use it very heavily) I am not optimistic that it will last a very long time, but hey, for fifty-nine bucks for 8gb it still is prob worth it.

5 out of 5 stars I'm nuts about it!   March 17, 2010

Money well spent. This player exceeded my expectations in every regard. Sound is superb, packed with features, mini-SD card extended its capacity to an incredible 16 gigs, and battery life is good. Best of all, it is no larger or heavier than a poker chip. The voice recorder is remarkable in clarity and sensitivity and the controls are simple to master. Good effort, SanDisk!

4 out of 5 stars Two steps back, three steps forward   March 17, 2010

Comparing this to the old Clip, the addition of folder based browsing, the MicroSDHC slot, and the integration of the actual clip into the chassis (replacing the replaceable but frequently snapping-out previous version) are all positive changes.

Two caveats that seem to be inadequate discussed however, are:
1: The former two way hold/power switch, while possible though not easy to accidentally trigger, is superior to the new version. The new power button is fine, but moving the hold feature to a secondary action on the home button is a bit clunky. Hardware design issues aside, though, the home button needs to be pressed for about twice as long as it should. Furthermore, the error message you get when you hit a button while in a hold state takes a good 5-10 seconds to slowly scroll across the screen - A big, big step back from the 1-2 second icon and error from the old clip. If you're used to whacking a button on your old clip to see your current track's title or status bar, this can get incredibly aggrevating. This can be effectively mitigated by future firmware updates

2: (The big one) The new Clip+ doesn't separate out the podcast and audiobook folders from the Music option. Jarring to hit "Play All" and have a 30 minute NPR broadcast pop up. While this can be worked around using folder-based navigation, that's not good enough as it doesn't allow for mixing in the MicroSDHC expansion card while excluding the internal podcast and audiobook folders. This is a major step backwards from podcast and audiobook management on the old Clips.

Reviewed with stock firmware, but haven't seen any changelogs on updates that hint at fixes for either of these problems. I'd be thrilled to be proved wrong, but this remains an accurate depiction of the out-of-the-box experience.

4 out of 5 stars Good sound, good value   March 17, 2010

I've had the Sansa Clip+ 8GB player for about 2 weeks, and so far I'm impressed. The player is easy to use, and the sound is quite good. Two features which were critical for me have both worked out well. The Clip+ plays FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec)-encoded files, allowing me to store only one encoding of a piece of music for use both at home and on the Clip+. And the Micro SDHC slot allows inexpensive expansion to 24GB -- plenty of room even for the fairly bulky FLAC files.

The Clip+ has two minor weaknesses worth mentioning. Battery life is not great (could this result from higher power demands to decode FLAC?). The earbuds included with the player are not bad, but the soft pads come off easily and do not go back on as easily -- an annoying but harmless problem.

Overall, I'm very pleased with this purchase.

1 out of 5 stars Battery Life Not as Advertised   March 14, 2010

I was really disappointed with this product, especially with all the great reviews on amazon. I was not able to get the advertised battery life of 15hrs or even close to it. I initially thought it was due to a defective battery so I requested a replacement from Amazon. When I got the second one, same thing!

The battery would not last for more than 5 hours max. I experimented with this to see if I could increase the life like turning down the brightness, only listening to the radio, etc., but that did not make much of a difference ... went from 4.5hrs to 5hrs max. Anyways after the second one had the same problem I ended up returning it too.
