Amazon.com Writer-director Theodoros Bafaloukos responded to Jamaica's siren call all the way over in Greece and came to the island to make this 1977 movie about a band of Rasta men/Robin Hoods getting their own back at the expense of those perennial bloodsuckers, the "uptown top rankings," as men of money and position are called in Jamaica. The reggae star-studded cast is undoubtedly the movie's most rewarding feature, though some reggae fans have objected to the demeaning sight of the incomparable late singer Jacob Miller threatening a friend with a knife over a purloined chicken leg or the equally great singer Gregory Isaacs exacting chump change for unlocking a tourist's rental car. However, these and other great reggae figures are also seen here in full and glorious performance at their peak. In fact, this film provides our only extended visual record of Miller's kinetic performance style and one of the best pieces of footage on Isaacs. Although Rockers doesn't approach the multilayered complexity of The Harder They Come and it does betray a little superiority now and then to its characters, there are plenty of laughs as well as insights into life at the time for Jamaica's growing Rastafarian movement. Drummer Leroy "Horsemouth" Wallace makes an unlikely though quintessentially Jamaican leading man as he moves between wooing the rich man's virginal daughter and making pit stops at the shack he shares with his wife and children. His band of accomplices is priceless, and the scene in which each struts in his own "stylee" to Peter Tosh's "Stepping Razor" is alone worth the price. --Elena Oumano

An Absolute Joy To Watch! July 15, 2009 Gordon Kyd (Sydney, NSW Australia) 'Rockers' single handedly converted me into being a fan of Jamaican roots rock reggae!
Each actor, or should I say professional musical artist who blesses the screen in 'Rockers', is a legend in their own right and a true pioneer of reggae (see all the legendary names in the other reviews here). It is such a colorful representation of the whole music scene from the gorgeous music to the stunning visuals that unfold through out. There is also lots of grit, dirt and unpleasantness which makes 'Rockers' feel almost like a documentary, albeit it's comical, slapstick qualities that the musicians/actors bring to the loose story.
This film feels so impromptu and organic, it grabs this amazing, original and fruitful era in reggaes history then displays all the wonders and harsh realities of the life of the musician within the Kingston scene. 'Rockers' also lightly brushes on the life of the Rastafari and the influence of this belief system has on the many musicians who grace the screen.
A monumental part of the magic of this film is it's immortal soundtrack which really is a fundamental presentation of the best roots reggae artists in the business of the time. There is virtually no scene in the film that doesn't have music setting the mood. The soundtrack beautifully showcases the many different styles, sounds and faces of this genre and is one of the best starting points to draw from for anyone wanting to get a broad spectrum of Jamaican reggae.
I have watched this film at least a half dozen times and see something new each time. 'Rockers' is a classic film capturing an almost historical account of Jamaican roots rock reggae, supported by natural and humorous performances that leaves the viewer drench in the mood, music, sounds and sights of this fascinating Caribbean island. Only the uptight and soulless won't takes something special from this film.
Enjoy!
Rockers February 3, 2009 Jamaica Friend (Columbus, Ohio USA) The movie was very entertaining and I loved the soundtrack! The cameo appearances by the artists themselves was a bonus!
Rootz April 9, 2008 P. Kennedy (Albuquerque, NM United States) This is one of the best Rootz Raggae movies of all times... It's great to see some of the reggaae greats in there prime... Jacob Miller, Gregory Isaacs, Jack Ruby, Burning Spears and more... It also represents old school rasta foundations... Respect to all de Youth... Check dis movie and see rootz...
He's a Rocker, She's a Rocker! February 9, 2008 Mike Robertson (Ashland, OR USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
When I first watched this, I had no idea what to expect. After it's all said and done, this is one of my favorite movies. Hopefully you don't mind subtitles (or speak rasta). Great tunes backing a movie with an even greater message. It'll make you skin your teeth. Two thumbs up!
As I Would Say!!!! December 27, 2007 Miss Green (LAFAYETTE, LOUISIANA USA) This was an awesome film. It was raw and authentic life in Jamaica. I loved all the cameo appearences by famous Reggae artist like: Burning Spear, Jacob Miller, Gregory Issacs and more. The performances were great but because they were speaking in patois it was great that I kept the caption on the first time watching it.
I recommend this movie as well as Countryman.
