Amazon.com For all of its conventional plotting about an obsessive-compulsive curmudgeon (Jack Nicholson) who improves his personality at the urging of his gay neighbor (Greg Kinnear) and a waitress (Helen Hunt) who inspires his best behavior, this is one of the sharpest Hollywood comedies of the 1990s. Nicholson could play his role in his sleep (the Oscar he won should have gone to Robert Duvall for The Apostle), but his mischievous persona is precisely necessary to give heart to his seemingly heartless character, who is of all things a successful romance novelist. As a single mom with a chronically asthmatic young son, Hunt gives the film its conscience and integrity (along with plenty of wry humor), and she also won an Oscar for her wonderful performance. Greg Kinnear had to settle for an Oscar nomination (while cowriter-director James L. Brooks was inexplicably snubbed by Oscar that year), but his work was also singled out in the film's near-unanimous chorus of critical praise. It's questionable whether a romance between Hunt and the much older Nicholson is entirely believable, but this movie's smart enough--and charmingly funny enough--to make it seem endearingly possible. --Jeff Shannon
Product Description Jack Nicholson Helen Hunt Greg Kinnear and Cuba Gooding Jr. star in James L. Brooks hit comedy As Good As It Gets. Nicholson gives a show-stopping performance as Melvin Udall an obsessive-compulsive novelist with Manhattans meanest mouth. But when his neighbor Simon is hospitalized Melvin is forced to baby-sit Simons dog. And that unexpected act of kindness-along with waitress Carol Connelly--helps put Melvin back in the human race. "Magically written directed and acted As Good As it gets is the best and funniest romantic comedy of the year."System Requirements:Starring: Jack Nicholson Helen Hunt Greg Kinnear Cuba Gooding Jr. and Skeet Ulrich Director: James L. "You make me want to be a better man" October 6, 2008 SUSANA GAIA (Brooklyn, NY USA) "As Good as It Gets" is Funny, insigthful, romantic, ... the main plot involves the encounter of an artistic man in his fifties who suffers from severe obsessive-compulsive disorder with a morally-correct waitress in her early forties who's trying her best to care for her allergy-prone child and still have a life of her own. The most appealing aspect of the movie is the realization that through a connection with another person ('love') one is able to overcome the difficulties and neurosis that alone, he or she may never had the courage or willingness to address. This movie is famous for the performance of both Helen Hunt and Jack Nicholson, including his line " You make me want to be a better man," which is a turning point in the movie when Jack's character undergoes a Self-realization that allows him to surpass his disorder limitations.
As Good as it gets and more! September 21, 2008 Garrett Ward (Salina, KS USA) I was really glad to get this title on DVD. It plays very well, and the delivery time was quick. I am very pleased with it. Garrett Ward
It couldn't have been any worse. June 13, 2008 B. Nallick (Mpls, MN) 1 out of 6 found this review helpful
If this is as good as it gets, we're all in trouble. The only part I liked was the end credits. Jacky is his usual obnoxious annoying self. Helen Hunt is her nasally annoying usual self. Greg plays the oh so painfully stereotypical gay character with HIV. Nicolson is the typical alpha male homophobe and Hunt is the only somewhat nice person in the movie. I literally had to force myself to watch this movie from start to finish. I'm so glad I didn't pay to see it in the theater, and I still can't believe this won any awards. Boring, generic dialogue. I'm sorry but other than "The Shining" Nicolson just annoys the living %$^% out of me. Another Hollyweird effort to prove to all of us how enlightened they are and how stupid we are. A major yawn from start to finish. Boring directing, dreadful script, unmemorable acting. I'm sure this movie has fans, but really considering how many awards this movie won, how many people actually remember it? I do, but not for the right reasons. I'd put this movie in my top twenty of all time worst movies any day. Note to Hollyweird, stop making movies about gay people if all you do is either depict us as dysfunctional (Brokeback Mountain) Psychotic (Basic Instinct) or to be laughed at (In & Out). How about one positive movie about gay people instead of the usual mind numbing stupidity we've come to expect. As Good As It Gets??? If it had been any worse it would have been straight to video. AVOID!!!!!!!!!
