Falling in love with Cast Iron March 19, 2010 Voracious Reader in WA (Seattle, WA) I have recently been getting deep into cast-iron cooking, and am truly falling in love with it. I started off with some pre-seasoned pieces, and quickly started searching for some of the enameled sets to cook the high-acidity foods which aren't well suited for the raw (seasoned) cast iron. After deciding that spending multiple hundreds of dollars for a Le Creuset just was not for me, I happily turned to the Lodge products.
I have used my 6 QT pot now for several dishes and cooking methods. This pot is quickly becoming my first choice go-to pot for soups, stews, chilis, and tomato sauces. The heavy lid stays firmly planted with no rattling while the contents are bubbling - I didn't realize how delightful it was to not hear that annoying sound while the soup is simmering away! Add to the versatility the great results when deep frying foods AND slow roasting in the oven, and this is a fabulous all-around useful pot for both stovetop and oven use.
One complaint I have is the knob. The plastic knob is temp-rated far lower than the pot itself, therefore limiting its versatility. We fixed this issue with a 2" Le Creuset Replacement Knob in stainless steel, available for purchase here on Amazon for around $10 or less. Add to this small annoyance a few bumps in the enamel, and that would sum up my very minor complaints about the product (thus the 4-star rating). Other than that, I adore it.
A quick note on cast-iron cooking: Use lower stove-top temps, and let the piece fully heat up before you fiddle with the heat. As a general rule, you don't want to set your stove-top on high for cast iron. The heat transfer and retention allow you to use lower temps to get the job done. On a dial based temp setting, I rarely set the dial at more than ½ way on, or Medium heat, with an occasional setting on Med-High for frying.
Overall, I love cooking with cast-iron, and this piece is a pleasure to work with.
Quality Issues--- Made in China Now March 12, 2010 Mary C 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
While several reviewers here noted that their enamel oven was made in the USA, current ones are marked "made in China". Another reviewer posted that Lodge's website now states that both enamel lines are made in China. I recently looked at this product at a brick and mortar (Walmart) and it was indeed marked "China". The enamel was thinner than the product that was made in the US, and I note the review made just 2 before mine states that the enamel peeled off after 1 use and they're returning it. I'm looking for a better quality product. It's too bad-- I wanted a quality Lodge enamel oven, but can't find one,
What a Fabulous Knockoff! March 6, 2010 Shoppingmaller (Wisconsin) I should have bought one of these years ago. Dollar for dollar, it's a great buy. I use it at least once a week - stews, soups, sauces. I hope to purchase the 3 qt. casserole size. I replaced the lid knob with a stainless steel Le Crueset knob ($10) because I wanted to be able to bake bread in the Dutch oven and the OEM knob won't stand the heat. It cleans easily, just follow manufacturer's instructions. Staining from tomato sauce, soups cleans up in seconds with a little bleach solution and a sponge. With weekly use since Christmas, mine looks brand new.
It's Junk March 5, 2010 D Shelton (Tucson AZ) We bought 2 of these pieces, based on reviews and on price, but they are already on their way back to Amazon -- because the enamel started to come off with the very first use! Furthermore, the claim that there is no bare cast iron around the rim of the pan appears to be untrue, because it rusted immediately. The lid, in fact, left a circular rust stain on my countertop. Despite the fact that Lodge constantly touts the fact that they are a US company and their wares Made in America, when you get the box you will find that all of their enamelware is actually made in China, which may be the problem. What a disappointment.
Wedding gift. March 3, 2010 Margarita (Cajun Country) I bought this Dutch Oven as a wedding gift. I had priced the same item at their wedding registery and found it with you for less money. This is the exact pot that they were looking for. Lodge Cast Iron pots are the best, I have in the past bought other name brand cast iron and they do not come close the the Lodge name brand. For the price they are the best cast iron pots you can find.
