| Customer Reviews: my favorite size November 27, 2009 bj (illinios) I have 2 of these ovens and the 10qt deep. I prefer the 12qt oven for braising and for use in the home oven. You should be aware that it will not fit in some ovens. These are great for party cooking. You can easily feed 50 hungry people with a set of these. Clean immediately after use and it is a lot easier to maintain the seasoning and not have to use soap. Be careful of the type of oil you store it with, some will leave a nasty gunk that is impossible to get off. I prefer to reheat the cleaned oven and hit it with a bit of lard before storage. Try braised country style pork ribs, beef short ribs, or a pork roast. They are all cheap cuts and give spectacular results. These cuts are easy too, just sear & brown and throw in the oven with some beef or chicken stock a few veggies and cook at 300 for 3-5 hrs.
Seems big, but it's the most useful size October 2, 2008 New England Yankee (Northern New England) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
If you are interested in traditional dutch oven cooking (with coals), this is the one to buy. Though not strictly required, having the legs built into the oven is convenient, as it not only saves you from having to prop the oven up on racks or rocks, but also makes it easier to put on a table. Mine has legs and I use it on the stovetop (gas) as well - the legs go right through the grate. In fact, they hold it in place nicely.
The lid, as in all Lodge dutch ovens, is purpose-made to hold coals, and the loop of the lid handle is high enough to stick up well above the coals for use with a lid lifter. It is also a useful size to buy. While it's tempting to go for a smaller dutch oven, the larger sizes hold and spread heat much better and burn less. The 10s and 12s are really the most useful sizes.
Buy it once, keep it forever!
What a beautiful peice of hardware October 5, 2007 Chef Jimmie's protegee (Fanwood, NJ United States) 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
As has been the case, for me, with all things lodge, the quality of this cast iron cookware is amazing. I didn't really need a dutch oven as large as this one, but when I saw this, I just couldn't resist. So far, I've only used it once (maybe because I just got it???) to make a shortrib recipe and it came out absolutely wonderful. I doubled up on all of the ingredients because I had to justify buying such a large dutch oven. Everything cooked evenly and to perfection.
I've been using cast-iron rather heavily for about four years now and will never look back. Speaking of using it heavily, I must caution you - this thing is "heavy"!!! That is not a negative. It's just to mention that quality is not "free". In any event, you can always use it for doing "curls" when you are not cooking with it. Just kidding all. You will never be sorry if you acquire this cast-iron marvel!!!
Lodge 16" Dutch Oven is top of the line April 26, 2006 Beamer (Seattle, WA USA) 9 out of 11 found this review helpful
As an avid Dutch oven cook I own 12 Lodge Dutch ovens. I own 2 16" ovens and use them regularly. I purchased the Lodge Logic Pre-seasoned 12 quart because I know the quality of the pre-seasoning and I choose not to have to smoke up my home to season one of Lodge's original ovens.
I have chosen Lodge because of their quality and durability. Just the other day I dropped not one but two of my 8 inch Dutch oven from the back of my truck onto the asphalt and both survived the incident. Please don't test your oven by dropping it, this is not the proper care and I am grateful for the quality of Lodge cast iron.
I give Lodge dutch ovens a big 5 star salute. Thanks to
Amazon and their associates for providing this product at a very good price.
