Product Description
Kuhn Rikon 6-piece Duromatic DUO Pressure Cooker Set - Kuhn Rikon DUO

Amazon.com Review
Splendid examples of why modern, safe pressure cookers are popular with contemporary cooks, the 5-1/4-quart pressure cooker and 2-1/8-quart pressure frying pan in this set quickly and healthfully cook foods with trapped steam at temperatures higher than boiling. Two lids, which fit both pans, are included--the pressure lid and a glass lid--so one pan can be used to cook under pressure while the other is used conventionally. Made of heavyweight, mirror-finish, 18/10 stainless steel, each pan has two handles and an aluminum disk sandwiched in stainless steel in its bottom to quickly and uniformly conduct heat.

Using a pressure cooker saves time and 70 percent of the energy normally consumed while cooking. Pressure-cooking requires little water so nutrients, flavor, and color are not boiled away. Vegetables emerge vibrantly colored. Stews, soups, beans, even meat loaf and pork chops and desserts like bread pudding come out tasty and nutritious. (A detailed instruction booklet containing dozens of recipes is included.) Meats can be browned before the pressure lid is locked on. The pressure lid's valve stem shows high and low pressure so heat can be adjusted for different foods. After cooking, pressure can be reduced slowly (by just letting the cooker sit a while), normally (by pressing the pressure indicator), or quickly (by running tepid water on the lid's rim).

Safety measures abound for the pressure lid. A silicone gasket ensures a tight seal. A vent releases steam if pressure builds too high, as does a valve that also locks the lid when any pressure whatsoever is inside the cooker. Cleanup is a bit involved. The pans, gasket, and lid require hand washing, and the gasket needs a light oiling. Normally, the valve is self-cleaning, but if food passes through it disassembly is required.

4 out of 5 stars Good price But Kuhn Rikon has better pressure cookers   June 3, 2009

This pressure cooker set is a great entry level set, although I find the large size sometimes not large enough. But, watch what you are purchasing, there are 2 separate types of lids on the Duromatic pressure cooker. This set has the inferior lid that is more difficult to read the pressure from a distance and more difficult to release the pressure (although it is still very good) As far as I can tell, the pressure cooker itself are the same, with the exception of the lid/release. If you have the extra money, this other lid is worth it--especially if you are a beginner. I regret that I bought the duromatic set without realizing the difference in the lids. I saw the price of the set and jumped on it without realizing the difference. I guess on the bright side, it means that I have pressure cookers in different sizes now.

If you are nervous about pressure cooking, there are awesome books out there to help lead the way-including pressuring cooking for dummies. My favorite is Miss Vickies Book of Pressure Cooker recipes, also found on amazon. She also has a website that offers a lot of free information as well as free recipes (although some have a small charge).

So, cook your food faster, save energy, retain more nutrients, and serve delicious homemade meals that seem like you have spent all day in the kitchen.

If you are taking the plunge into pressure cooking starting with a good product will make a huge difference as to whether or not you are satisfied with the results as well as the safety. On an investment like this, go for quality-whether it is this set with this type of lid or the Duromatic set with the other type of lid.

the only reason i gave this 4 stars is because of the lid.

5 out of 5 stars Ultimate pressure cooker   February 9, 2009

I am essentialy a vegetarian, and I am coming from various Walmart, and French T-Fal pressure cookers. None have worked for a length of time. Kuhn Rikon's strength lies in being able to cook without losing any liquid. No liquid loss means spices and aromatics stay in the food, you will lose some spice tones as you are cooking at 220 F but most of the flavor will stay intact. There are other premium Pressure Cookers that can do this also (Fisslers for one), but I have found Kuhn Rikon to be simple and robust in design with spare parts network. None are cheap. I have a gas range, so maintaining the ring pressure was not a problem I do not know how it will work on electric range. This pressure cooker is excellent for doing Chicken/Beef Stocks. You feed frozen chicken with water and you get stock.

3 out of 5 stars Beautiful, expensive choice   December 21, 2008

I used to cook with a pressure cooker that my mother had given me and I loved the time saved using it. Somehow in one of my many moves, it disappeared. After considerable research, I chose the Kuhn Rikon Duromatic Pressure Cooker Set. It is a beautiful set of pans that work very well. My only hesitation in recommending this purchase to someone else is the expense. I think the cooking results could be obtained with other pressure cookers. I must admit I was swayed by the brand reputation. The fact is that it is still just a pressure cooker underneath its beautiful looks. As long as you know that ahead of time, go ahead.

3 out of 5 stars Great product, very expensive replacement parts!   December 8, 2008

I have had Kuhn Rikon Duromatic Duo for nearly 5 years. This is a great pressure cooker from the point of view of functionality, construction and looks. For this, I would have rated the product five stars. However, I am taking two stars off because prices for replacement parts for Kuhn Rikon pressure cookers border on daylight robbery. Be aware that every two years or so you would need to replace as many as 3 gaskets. Herein lies the problem - the tiny rubber valve costs $16.00, the big gasket is about $20.00 and the gasket for the main valve is $5.00. There are only two places in the U.S. that I found on the Internet that sell these parts and they basically ask for whatever they want (one of these sites is Kuhn Rikon approved). So with shipping, you are looking at spending $50.00 every two years for buying some rubber gaskets for this product. This is many times over what you would pay for gaskets for competing products. This, in my view, substantially reduces the value/money ratio for this product. And just don't lik companies that play such games, especially when they are charging premium price for the product itself.
