Product Description
The U.S. military detention center at GuantÁnamo Bayknown to the public as Gitmohas been called the American Gulag, a scene of medieval horrors where innocent farmers and goat herders swept up in Afghanistan and Iraq have been sequestered, tortured, and abused for years on end without access to legal counsel or basic medical services. Gordon Cucullu, a retired army colonel, was so appalled by these reports that he decided to see for himself. In a series of visits he inspected every corner of the camp and interviewed dozens of personnel, from guards and interrogators to cooks and nurses. The resultcoming just as the Obama administration wants to close the facilityis a riveting description of daily life for both prisoners and guards. Cucullu describes the six camps reserved for different levels of compliance, details the treatment of prisoners, and examines their experiences in detail, including the techniques used to interrogate them, the food they eat, their medical care, how they communicate with one another, and the many ingenious ways they contrive to assault and injure their guards. While some prisoners were indeed treated harshly in the early days, when the hastily built camp was flooded with battlefield captures and fears ran high of another 9/11-style attack, Cucullu finds that these excesses were quickly corrected. Current treatment and oversight routines exceed the standards of any maximum-security prison in the world. Despite what the public has heard, these are not innocent goatherds but dedicated jihadists whose overriding goalas they themselves candidly sayis to kill Americans. Should they now be released to return to the fight, perhaps on American soil? Read this book and decide for yourself.

How refreshing: Fact-based truth September 21, 2009 David Kloss 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
The world needs more books like this. Whatever you think about the topic of Guantanamo, Lt. Col. Cucullu has taken the time to gather the facts about what is really going on "inside the wire." This type of accountable reporting is something painfully lacking in the popular media. What is shown on the evening news generates inaccurate, unfair accusations and downright falsehoods about a topic that Americans must be properly informed about. This book doesn't tell the so-called "other side," it lets you know what's really going on.
A former opponent of the Guantanamo detention center myself, I never thought I would enjoy and appreciate a book like this. It's definitely opened my eyes. This type of responsible fact finding and reporting is simply refreshing.
A real eye opener... August 10, 2009 Richard J. Sciacca 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
The author destroys the myth that the people detained at Gitmo are "innocent goatherders". More Americans (and peope form other nations) need to read this and wake up to what we are dealing with; maybe then it will sink in that our issues with terrorism are real, and the problem is not going away simply because of who is currently occupying the White House.
Disturbing, but important information - decently written May 13, 2009 Kevin R. (Heartland, Iowa) A thoroughly researched treatise on the detainees at Gitmo, done by person that actually traveled there, repeatedly, not just the repeat of rumor. It is unfortunate that the men and women in our armed services are so poorly portrayed by our media. These folks are done the best they can, which is pretty darn good, in a no win situation.
Organization sometimes a little hard to follow, writing is fair. The sincerity of the author is unquestionable.
The truth about Gitmo April 17, 2009 Thelma R. Jensen (Litchfield Park , AZ USA) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I was elated to read the truth about Gitmo after constantly reading and hearing the complaints from the ACLU and others who despised the Bush Administration. I am convinced the author has given the readers an honest description of the situation at Gitmo.
Great book, about keeping combatants off the field of battle April 16, 2009 J. Adams (Grannys Neck, Texas) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is a great book, a real page turner. Gives you the lowdown on what really goes on at Gitmo, and how the military personal behave and how the detainees behave. Shows the great leadership in the US military, and how dedicated they are to their Mission. Defending the USA from all enemies.
This book details the life of not only the detainees, also the guards, the military commander, the general layout of the camp, the precautions taken by the guards to protect the detainees, the abuse the guards take by having foul fluids thrown on them by detainees, etc.
I very highly recommend this book and wish that it were on the shelves of each and every high school in the USA.
