Story
When Professor Layton's mentor, Dr. Schrader, turns up dead with no clear answer as to why, it's up to the renowned puzzle-solver and his apprentice, Luke, to unravel the mystery. The only clue thus far is a train ticket for the Molentary Express. What could it mean, and who — or what — might have caused Dr. Schrader's death? In order to find out, Professor Layton and Luke will embark on an odyssey filled with challenging puzzles which may lead them to an object known as the Elysian Box, rumored to kill all who open it.

Gameplay
As with other games in the Professor Layton series, gameplay in Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box is linked to a richly illustrated storyline, in-game environments and non-player characters (NPCs). Diabolical Box takes this further than the original game, with more locations to explore, significantly more animated cutscenes and the deeper level of voice talent employed. As players move through the game with an aim towards solving the overarching mystery they will encounter characters who can forward their progress if they return the favor in advance by solving a puzzle. These brainteasers cover everything from mazes and riddles, to logic and sliding puzzles and everything in-between. There are no time limits on puzzles and 'hint coins' found and earned throughout the game can be used to purchase up to three hints per puzzle. The game cartridge contains 150 puzzles, but it is not necessary to solve every puzzle in order to finish the game. Those who do though and yearn for even more can access additional puzzles via a DS and/or DSi Wi-Fi connection. These will be released weekly for the first 33 weeks after game launch. In addition to standard brainteasing puzzle play the game also features a series of mini-games that although do not affect the outcome of the game directly, can help with players' interactions with NPCs, and thus have an impact on progress through the game, as well as serve to vary gameplay.

Key Game Features

  • Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box features a riveting new mystery and more than 150 new brain teasers, riddles and logic puzzles to challenge and delight players.
  • Beyond the puzzles found in the game cartridge, players with a broadband Internet connection who connect their Nintendo DS and Nintendo DSi systems to Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection will get access to downloadable bonus puzzles. A new puzzle will be available each week for 33 weeks after the game launches.
  • The game includes a significantly greater amount of voice work and animated cutscenes compared to the original game.
  • New memo pad feature which allows players to work through puzzles more easily solved by sketching out possible scenarios.
  • A variety of mini-games that although do not directly affect the outcome of the game, provide variety of gameplay, and can help with the Professor and Luke's relations with NPCs.
  • No time limits on puzzles allows players to take their time before answering or using an in-game 'hint coin.'

5 out of 5 stars Good Sequel   March 18, 2010
Sanjay Sil
The second edition of Prof Layton is a bit different from the first one in terms of storyline which runs through diverse environments and varying levels of excitement. There are few characters from earlier version, who revisit this episode. At times, the narration may be lengthy but necessary to continue the thread. There are preponderance of few categories of puzzles like the ones that rely heavily on visual judgments and the sliding blocks. There are additional puzzles that you can download using wifi connection. Overall, we all enjoyed it playing. A very good buy, indeed.

2 out of 5 stars Horribly slow pacing   March 14, 2010
J. Zeaman (Ashland, OR USA)
There is a certain charm to this game and the puzzles are pretty good. The problem is the incredibly long, slow cut scenes of animation in between every puzzle.

I have played alot of games in my life and I have no problem with a little bit slower paced, sweet game, but this one drove me NUTS. I played through the first 20% of the puzzles and then I just couldn't take it anymore.

I like animation and I like puzzle games, but don't switch back and forth between them for a whole game.

In short: WAY LESS animation and story, WAY MORE puzzles and the ability to get into puzzle solving mode and stay there for a while.

This game has no "flow state". It's a shame, clearly there is talent at work here and a real sensitivity to tone that is nice to see...but the final product doesn't hold up as a game.

3 out of 5 stars Searched for puzzle-filled mystery, but found sadness   March 12, 2010
Katherine Scalaro
I made a beeline for this game after finishing "Professor Layton and the Curious Village". I adored it! The puzzles were entertaining (albeit challenging for my occasional not-so-intelligent brain), the voice acting was quite good, the art and music was fantastic, and I loved the storyline! Once I confirmed that I liked the game and wanted another set in the Layton-verse, I decided to pick up "Diabolical Box", expecting a satisfying follow-up mystery.

I completed "Diabolical Box" about 3 days ago, and I must say that I found most of what I was looking for. The puzzles were fun (although "Curious Village" had more of the silly, random puzzles that I preferred than plot-linked ones), the voice acting was just as great, there were a good deal more cut-scenes, extra voice acting was thrown in, and the art and music was of the same caliber as the first game's. However, the story had a good number of unresolved questions. Several times I was left scratching my head. What really got me, though, was how much darker the plot of the story was. It was absolutely tragic. While "Curious Village" had a few bittersweet moments, "Diabolical Box" was simply heart-wrenching. I sobbed at the end, and have had trouble cheering myself up. I myself am not able to appreciate the intricate plot-line of this game. I came looking for a game with a particular genre, and I got something completely different. I feel unsatisfied with that.

On a final note, if you are feeling sad, or are suffering from depression, I would not recommend this game to you. This also goes to people who are emotionally sensitive to certain chords or strains of music. The end theme made me weep, and I start tearing up whenever it pops in my head.

5 out of 5 stars Just As Good As The First One - Maybe Better   March 10, 2010
Scott Allen (New York)
By now, the first installment of Professor Layton is well-known to DS owners as perhaps the best non-action game ever made for the platform. This second installment may be even better. The concept is exactly the same: you travel with Professor Layton throughout an interesting narrative, solving brain-teaser puzzles along the way. You are given some latitude, but ultimately you must solve the majority of the puzzles to "win" the game and solve the mystery.

This game, despite having the same type of puzzles as the first one, is still different and fresh. The main story is different and interesting.

What's better about this game is there is more actual animated sequences in the game, which adds to its cinematic quality. What's not quite as good is some of the puzzles seem a bit forced -like the authors had to really wrack their brains to come up with new ones.

Overall a wonderful experience - my 9 year old daughter and I solved this game together. I was pleasantly surprised to see how much her puzzle-solving skills had progressed after the first game. She could solve a large percentage of the puzzles.

This may be the only DS game you don't mind letting your kid play for hours!

4 out of 5 stars Great for All   March 4, 2010

The Professor Layton series is perfect for the casual gamer but can also appeal to intermediates or advanced players. It is a great game to play on the go and doesn't require a large block of time to play. The game features unique gameplay with the players answering brainteaser that range from tricky to downright challenging. This gameplay is layered over an engaging mystery story as intriguing as most mystery books. While the gameplay is fun and engaging it starts to get dull at some points. However, it is definitely worth playing to the finish. I recommend this game to any players 10 and older, including adults!
