Story
In a distant future, the planets at the outer edges of the galaxy have become a beacon to fortune seekers and those yearning for a better life off world. But there are no guarantees in deep space. Pandora, one of these distant planets, was reported to be rich in untapped mineral wealth, and so drew many hoping to get rich quick, but in the end little was found beyond the scattered ruins of a past alien civilization. With nothing to gain, any who could soon abandoned Pandora, leaving those who remained to deal with the lawlessness of a world gone bust, and the mystery of the long-dead alien civilization. But as chaotic as these times were, there were worse days yet to come. After several years the planet's huge orbit slowly brought it near to its sun and once unknown and horrifying creatures sprang from their long hibernation to terrify the stranded colonists. The only hope of the colonists seems to be a vault discovered in the side of a mountainside, rumored to contain alien technology and secrets about Pandora. Will this discovery be the colonist's salvation or their end? Discover their fate in Borderlands.

Gameplay
As in a traditional RPG, Borderlands is built around the continual leveling of characters as they delve into quests. These quests include both story-driven adventures and side quests that offer players rewards such as items exclusive to quest completion and/or forward movement of the story. Players can look forward to action set in both single player and multiplayer modes--including co-op play--as well as vehicular combat, literally thousands of different types of weapons that change each time you play and randomly generated maps and map features.

Playable Characters
Borderlands features several playable characters, each with its own unique backstory, abilities and skills. Skills can be leveled up, allowing for improvement of things like health, accuracy with weapons and capacity for items. In addition to this, characters possess unique skill tree development, ensuring that each will develop differently regardless of time spend leveling them up.

4 out of 5 stars Good Action, Fun leveling,...just one more quest...   November 20, 2009

Fun Game I really enjoyed it. It is very stylized and exciting. Left me playing just one more quest before I went to bed at night lol.

4 out of 5 stars A UNIQUE FPS/RPG HYBRID   November 19, 2009
A Gamer at Heart (Agoura Hills, CA USA)
I have been playing FPS games for well over 10 years now. I have played RPG games as well, but to a much lesser extent.

Borderlands is certainly a fun and highly addictive game, but with a caveat. I think it works best when you play with someone else. (I'll explain more below). The game is a shooter at heart - you have entertaining and ever-evolving weapons that you acquire as dropped "loot." For the non RPG gamers out there, loot is the fun stuff that killed enemies drop and that you gather from found enemy chests and lockers. For the most part, you go from place to place and shoot various types of enemies. This is straight running and gunning.

The RPG elements comes into play because you have some limited abilities to customize your character. You can choose from 4 different classes, which basically define what "special ability" you will have. You can be a sniper, a soldier, a brawler, or a female character that can become invisible for short periods of time. The chosen class gives you a special ability like deploying turrets, sending out a hunting bird, going invisible, etc. The class also defines what class of weapon you can specialize in that will deal additional damage. For instance, the soldier can add damage to shotguns and assault weapons, while the sniper (AKA Hunter) can add more damage to sniper rifles and pistols. But at the end of the day, all can shoot and use all weapons. Now, a true RPG game has an in depth story. Borderlands does not, not at all. The basic story involves you are on a Road Warrior type planet hunting for alien artifacts. That's about it. If you really want a story, this is not your game.

That said, it is still a fun game. I think it is best played with a partner because the environment is pretty desolate and barren, and without an engaging story, I think it would be a bit dull to play this through alone. I am playing it coop, split screen, with my son off a single x-box and having a great time. I applaud the developer for including the split screen option. It was brilliant.

The graphics are "cell shaded," meaning it looks like a comic book. I almost didn't buy it for this reason alone, but it actually works with this game and looks great. The game has a sense of cool style - I recommend it fully.

4 out of 5 stars Awesome loot game   November 18, 2009
Aaron Gillett (Los Angeles, CA)
I can't stop playing his game! Even though I have Modern Warfare 2 sitting there I still have the most enjoyment playing Borderlands. There isn't another title like it on the XBOX 360!

5 out of 5 stars Borderlands Well worth the $55   November 17, 2009
William Dillon (Billerica, MA, USA)
If you like FPS or RPG just get it the cell shading on the unreal engine and minute attention to deal are apparent. Much better on Live when you have 4 people on co-op.

1 out of 5 stars Corruption   November 17, 2009

I loved the game play. It looks like a wacked out cartoon in the best way, and it's a lot prettier than Fallout. The quests are in depth, and really fun as long as you stick to the main quest, (though some of the side quests can get pretty old...)

The only complaint I have about this game is the Corruption of game files. It's not a game play-problem, but a programming one. One glaring and horrific enough that you'd think they'd fix it before the game was released.

I bought this game as a present for my boyfriend and we played for over 10 hours on our first run. We loaded the game up fine a few subsequent times, but two days later we try to load up and suddenly his character is corrupted! A level 26 Beserker gone in an instant. I looked online and apparently this is a common problem that the game programmers didn't fix before releasing, (which doesn't make me think much of them, despite the awesome game.)

I'm currently powerlevel-ing him up, but it doesn't go fast or easy with my 26 Hunter. The point is, I shouldn't have too. It's frustrating and annoying as frilly heck and I resent it like you wouldn't believe.

I've read that the problem comes from not going in and saving properly, (apparently auto-saving isn't reliable,) and shutting off the game during play, or from having the power go out while you're auto-saving. Another thing is that if you get disconnected from Xbox Live don't reconnect right away. Quit and save and THEN reconnect, or there's a chance your file will corrupt too.

Way too much fricking corruption.

The game is worth playing, but take precautions to always save and exit properly. That, or don't get too attached to your character.
