5 out of 5 stars Gift   July 9, 2008
Valree R. Thielen (South Carolina)
This was another gift for my husband, and he loves Sonic so he was really happy when he got this. He says it is a lot of fun, and it goes very well with the Sonic Rush Adventure. Which was just a ploy to get me to buy both, but it was worth it!

5 out of 5 stars Simply amazing   June 24, 2008

Simply awesome and addictive. The music above all. Besides, the game is easy to beat. Despite having two playable characters, the game is still fun to play especially playing the game as Blaze the cat because she's so cool.

4 out of 5 stars A straight forward Sonic game that returns to its roots.   June 8, 2008
Robert Thompson
Sonic has strayed from his 2D lineage in recent years to try and compete with the likes of Mario and Ratchet and Clank in the 3D realm of platforming. With the exception of the adventure series, his attempts have been futile. Now, I had been hearing that the hand-held Sonic games were still solid additions to the series, so when I saw this game sued, I decided I'd give it a try.

The graphics here are essentially the traditional 2D look with some tweaks. First of all the characters themselves are 3D models, while the background, along with the game-play itself, is still largely 2D. This provides a unique look to the game, that I personally like. It's sort of like bringing the old Sonic games into the new age of gaming. The backgrounds are all well done and very colorful, in the usual Sonic fashion. Everything is pretty traditional, with some 3D effects added.

The soundtrack is pretty typical for a Sonic game. Not bad, but not amazing either. Fast paced rock with bad lyrics and some techno. I just turned off the music and listened to my ipod while playing.

The game-play is classic Sonic game-play for the most part. Very fast with solid level design and power ups. Although sometimes I just can't shake the feelings that I'm just pressing forward and occasionally jumping so I don't fall into a pit. This is especially the case when you pick up enough speed to just run straight through your enemies. They did add in a few novelties here and there like swinging on a chain to reach an otherwise unattainable place. However, this has all been done before, and you really don't come across things like that very often in the game. You can also play as Blaze for aome more game-play value. The boss fights are in 3D to mix up the game-play a bit, and it actually works quite well. Why they can't accomplish this in the console attempts of a 3D Sonic is beyond me.

If you're a Sonic fan you should check this game out. If you're just into platformers, you'll probably enjoy this as well. This is essentially what the console Sonic games should be.

3 out of 5 stars A decent Sonic installment   June 8, 2008
Matt V. (Philadelphia, PA)
For every good Sonic game that comes out now, there's about 4 or 5 bad ones. Sonic Rush is one of the good ones, although it has its shortcomings.
The basic gameplay is classic Sonic: extremely fast side-scrolling in a 2D environment. The level designs are creative and very colorful. There are other gameplay elements that work well too. The boss battles are a new, refreshing experience and are fun. However, both the side-scrolling and boss battles can get very repetitive. The game also utilizes the touch screen of the DS with the chaos emerald bonus challenges. For the most part it works well, but it seems that the developers just through it in the game to add a touch screen aspect.
Irritating aspects of the game include the music and certain enemy placement. You'll be flying through a level, snagging rings, when BAM! An enemy will appear in your path and you'll have less than a split second to react. This breaks up the pace of certain levels and only acts as an annoyance.
The ability to play as Blaze the Cat adds length and replay value to the game. However, it fails to offer any new features because Blaze's levels are the same as Sonic's.
Despite its flaws, Sonic Rush is a decent game and a very good Sonic game. It is a definite hit in a long streak of misses in the Sonic franchise.
